In a bold move to set new industry standards, Pornhub's parent company Aylo has teamed up with other major adult content producers to form the Adult Studio Alliance (ASA). This coalition is committed to implementing a Code of Conduct that aims to ensure safety and transparency across the industry.
Although safety practices like bi-weekly STI testing have long been a staple in U.S. professional porn, the ASA's initiative is more about creating uniformity in these protocols. "The ASA Code of Conduct sets a benchmark for how adult content should be made," said Alex Kekesi, Aylo's VP of brand and community.
The ASA's Code of Conduct is comprehensive, covering numerous aspects of production. It promises performers transparency regarding scene details and partners before shooting. The guidelines also require pre-shoot discussions and boundary checks, along with the presence of an intimacy coordinator at all stages of filming.
“When we protect performers' rights, we foster an empowering work environment and destigmatize porn, ultimately benefiting both our industry and society,” added Kekesi.
Other crucial rules include prohibitions on drugs and alcohol on set and the necessity for ethical and transparent representation. The full guidelines are available on the ASA's website.
Veteran performer Cherie DeVille, known for her activism, praised the initiative, calling it a cornerstone for a respectful and successful industry. Jiz Lee, a performer and marketing director, acknowledged the efforts of the ASA but expressed a wish for more focus on issues like AI technology and working with HIV-positive performers.
These developments come amid heightened scrutiny of the adult industry, with various countries implementing age-verification laws. Critics argue these measures infringe on privacy and may not be effective. Meanwhile, conservative factions in the U.S. are pushing for stricter regulations, including outright bans on pornography.
