Roblox, the wildly popular online game, is catching flak for being a potential playground for predators. While it might seem like a safe, child-friendly environment with its colorful, blocky graphics, young users and researchers reveal a darker side lurking beneath its surface. Reports of sexual predators, far-right extremism, and other harmful content have raised serious concerns about the platform's soft safety measures.
National technology reporter, Ange Lavoipierre, highlights these issues, noting that Roblox's vastness and the user-generated nature of its content make moderation a challenge. With approximately 110 million daily users, nearly 40% of whom are under 13, the platform's appeal to children is undeniable. But this mixed-age environment often allows adults to masquerade as children, creating a breeding ground for inappropriate interactions.
Take Ollie, a 16-year-old from Melbourne, who has been navigating Roblox for nine years. He shares chilling experiences of encountering pro-Nazi demonstrations, explicit content, and extreme harassment. Moreover, Ollie has been approached by adults posing as kids, attempting to establish private communications on other platforms. Despite these dangers, many parents remain unaware of the extent of harmful content their children might encounter.
“I knew way too much at a young age, mainly because of these platforms. Most parents believe Roblox is safe, but it’s hard to manage and control,” says Ollie.
While Roblox isn't alone in facing such challenges, it’s become a particular focus due to its seemingly innocent appeal. The anonymity of users and the trickable age verification system adds to the risk, making it an attractive target for predators. As discussions continue about a potential social media ban set to start in December, Roblox's inclusion remains in question.
According to Lavoipierre, the eSafety Commissioner has reached out to Roblox and other companies to assess their compliance. Although Roblox claims it shouldn’t be affected by the ban, it plans to enhance safety measures by the year's end. With age checks for communication users on the horizon, experts remain cautiously optimistic but await tangible improvements.
