Roblox, the popular online gaming platform, announced plans on November 19th to roll out an innovative "age-based chat" feature globally, utilizing facial age estimation technology. This groundbreaking feature is set to premiere in select regions, including Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, in early December, with a worldwide release to follow in January. With this update, Roblox aims to enhance user safety by ensuring age-appropriate interactions.
The core of this update lies in its cutting-edge technology, which estimates a user's age by analyzing their facial image. This allows Roblox to categorize users into six distinct age groups: under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21 and older. By doing so, Roblox restricts chat capabilities to those within the same or similar age brackets, fostering safer communication on the platform.
“By applying facial age verification to chat, we are helping create a more age-appropriate environment for all users, and we hope this standard spreads across the industry,” said Matt Kaufman, Roblox's Chief Safety Officer.
For instance, a child estimated to be 12 years old can only chat with peers aged 15 or younger, while an 18-year-old user can communicate only with those 16 and older. Exceptions are made for "trusted connections," where real-life acquaintances can interact despite age differences.
Roblox is stepping up its safety measures for minors. Chat features for users under 9 are disabled by default, requiring parental approval to activate. In Korea, children under 13 need guardian consent for the facial age estimation process, aligning with current policies. Age verification happens via the Roblox app using the user's smartphone camera, and all images and videos are promptly deleted post-verification by their partner, Persona.
While age verification remains optional, opting out limits access to certain features, including chatting. Roblox continues to prioritize privacy and safety, having introduced over 145 new safety features since January, such as real-time AI monitoring and content restrictions.
Matt Kaufman, Roblox's Chief Safety Officer, emphasized the platform's dedication to maintaining a safe, positive, and age-appropriate environment for its 150 million users. With the introduction of facial age verification for chat, Roblox is setting a new standard for the industry, strengthening user protections while respecting privacy.
Roblox's partnership with 20 global safety organizations and law enforcement agencies further underscores its commitment to safety, offering a secure gaming experience for all its users worldwide.
