A 45-year-old man from Texas, Chad Michael Watts, found himself in hot water after a video capturing a physical confrontation with high school students went viral. The incident occurred during a student walkout protest against ICE at Moe and Gene Johnson High School in Buda, Texas. Police announced Watts’ arrest on Tuesday, charging him with two counts of assault causing bodily injury.
The altercation began when Watts engaged in a verbal spat with a student. It quickly escalated into a physical clash involving multiple students. Video footage shows Watts tussling with two students before hitting the ground, as more students surround him, delivering punches and kicks. Amidst the chaos, Watts clutches a red hat and eventually retreats to his pickup truck, with students in pursuit, throwing objects and yelling.
“At first, I thought, 'Are they jumping this guy?' Then I realized he’s an adult who probably instigated the violence,” a parent told KEYE-TV.
Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing the need for adults to exercise restraint around children. "Violence or intimidation directed at a minor during a peaceful demonstration is unacceptable," Becerra stated. The police, after reviewing the incident, identified Watts as the primary aggressor. Both he and a student sustained minor injuries, and further charges may be pending.
The altercation has sparked a broader discussion about adult responsibilities in the context of student-led protests. Texas Governor Greg Abbott's earlier condemnation of student walkouts and the Texas Education Agency's guidance on consequences for such protests add layers to the conversation.
Judge Becerra further commented, "Our duty as a community is to protect the vulnerable and uphold freedoms of speech and peaceful assembly for all residents, regardless of viewpoint." The incident stands as a stark reminder of the tensions that can arise when political views clash in educational settings.
