What's with All the Chair Emojis?

If you’ve been scratching your head over the sudden influx of chair emojis in TikTok comment sections, you’re definitely not alone. This peculiar trend has left many users puzzled.

The backstory? A playful swap of the laughing emoji for the humble chair, courtesy of TikTok user @blank.antho. Over a week ago, he posted videos to his million-plus followers, inviting them into this quirky inside joke. "If you're watching this, you're part of the inside joke," he declared. His followers took the bait, and the chair emoji began its viral journey.

The KSI Connection

But that’s not the whole story. Some think the chair emoji wave originated with @ksi, a popular YouTuber and TikTok personality. With a history of using the emoji in his posts, including a 2020 video where he laughs at a chair, fans speculate @ksi might have started this emoji exchange as a nod to his contagious laugh.

“We will be raiding the legend himself @ksi," @blank.antho said, hinting at a playful targeting of KSI as part of the fun.

The plot thickened when @blank.antho tagged @ksi in his since-deleted announcement, suggesting a collaboration or at least a mutual understanding of the joke.

Emoji Evolution and the Viral Future

While the origins remain hazy, the chair emoji has definitely spread beyond its original context, leaving TikTok users either laughing or scratching their heads. This isn’t the first emoji to evolve in meaning – we’ve seen the skull emoji used for laughter, among others. The chair is just the latest twist in the emoji saga.

Whether this playful trend will stick around or fade into the TikTok ether remains to be seen, but for now, it’s definitely causing a stir. As for us, we’re sticking with the classic laughing emoji while enjoying the spectacle from the sidelines.
