In a shocking turn of events, Timothy James Sonier, a middle school teacher in Tucson, was taken into custody last Thursday. The 48-year-old faces grave accusations of uploading child sexual abuse material, according to authorities. This distressing case has put a spotlight on the Tucson Unified School District and the schools where Sonier worked.
Sonier, who also served as an athletic coach at Salpointe Catholic High School, was apprehended and booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Complex. He is currently charged with ten counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, raising serious concerns in the local community.
This case began unraveling back in December 2025. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children flagged a shocking report involving the upload of suspected child sexual abuse content. Initially reported to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the investigation traced the activity to Tucson, prompting a handover to local authorities.
Working alongside Tucson police’s Human Exploitation and Trafficking Unit (HEaT), the Forensic Electronic Media Unit (FEMU), and Homeland Security Investigation (HSI), law enforcement identified Sonier as the suspect. This collaborative effort was crucial in piecing together the evidence that led to his arrest.
“It's a relief to see progress in this case, but the community remains on edge,” said a local parent.
Following the arrest, investigators, supported by HSI, executed search warrants at Sonier’s residence and his workplace at Dodge Traditional Magnet School. During these searches, officers seized multiple electronic devices. A forensic review of these devices ultimately resulted in the charges against Sonier.
As the investigation continues, authorities have assured the public that, as of now, no local victims have been identified. However, they urge anyone with potential information to reach out anonymously to 88-CRIME (27463).
