First, it was the comeback of 2000s fashion, and now it's the return of the late 2000s blogging scene. This time, Tumblr is making waves with a daring announcement – the platform is welcoming back the female-presenting nipple, alongside other varieties of nudity. It's a strategic move aimed at enticing both former users and curious newcomers, especially in light of the current upheaval within Twitter's community following Elon Musk's controversial takeover.
Back in its prime, Tumblr nurtured a vibrant NSFW community, but the platform's 2018 adult content ban dealt a significant blow, resulting in a staggering 30% drop in traffic. With this latest announcement, Tumblr seems keen to mend the past and re-establish itself as a sex-positive haven where art, expression, and yes, nudity, can flourish without stigma.
Tumblr's recent staff blog post emphasized a renewed openness: "We now welcome a broader range of expression, creativity, and art on Tumblr, including content depicting the human form (yes, that includes the naked human form)," it stated. This shift allows creators to share content with nudity, mature themes, or sexual elements, as long as they utilize the platform's Community Label feature, introduced in September, to label their work appropriately. This feature covers a wide range of themes, including erotic content.
“Nudity and other kinds of adult material are generally welcome,” Tumblr states in its freshly updated Community Guidelines. “We’re not here to judge your art, we just ask that you add a Community Label to your mature content so that people can choose to filter it out of their Dashboard if they prefer.”
While this marks a significant shift, Tumblr isn't reverting to a no-holds-barred approach to explicit content. The platform still prohibits "visual depictions of sexually explicit acts" and content heavily focused on genitalia. Exceptions exist for "historically significant" artworks, provided they're labeled appropriately, but the ban on bestiality remains firm.
Tumblr's revival comes at a time when Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter has stirred unrest among its users. Comparisons are being drawn between Musk's leadership and the infamous decline of Tumblr post-Yahoo's $1.1 billion acquisition in 2013, which included the contentious porn ban. This led to a mass user exodus, leaving a once-thriving platform a shell of its former self until Automattic purchased it in 2019 for a mere $3 million.
Despite Tumblr's past troubles, Musk's disruptive influence on Twitter has some users eyeing a nostalgic return to Tumblr's blogging heyday. The platform's re-embrace of the female-presenting nipple might just be the catalyst some need to dust off their accounts and dive back into the mix.
While Tumblr's nudity policy isn't a complete return to the wild days of its past, CEO Matt Mullenweg insists that a "go nuts, show nuts" philosophy simply isn't feasible in today's regulatory climate. Nevertheless, this move is a notable step towards reclaiming the platform's former glory, where creativity and nip slips were the order of the day.
