Big changes are on the horizon for Discord users as the popular chat platform gears up to introduce a mandatory age verification process. Announced for a global rollout in early March, this move follows suit with Roblox, making Discord the latest to prioritize age-specific user experiences.
Wondering how this verification works? Users will encounter a prompt to verify their age once the system launches. The process kicks off with a simple click on the 'Get Started' button, followed by uploading a selfie or a government-issued ID. In cases where the system can't determine age from a selfie alone, both a photo and ID might be required. Rest assured, Discord ensures all uploaded images are deleted after verification.
“Age verification aims to create a safer, customized experience for users of all ages,” a Discord representative stated.
So, where do you fit into Discord's new age categories? By default, all accounts will initially be placed in the teen age group. Teen accounts inherently bypass the verification step but come with restrictions, such as blurred sensitive content, limited channel access, and a segregated inbox for messages from unknown users.
Adults looking to enjoy unrestricted access will need to confirm their age to move into the adult age group. Without verification, adult users remain in the teen group, missing out on certain content and functionalities. Notably, teens won't be able to speak during server stage events, and age-restricted channels remain out of reach.
What happens if you don't verify your age? Adult users staying in the teen group will face content restrictions, with some platform experiences remaining locked. Additionally, users under the minimum age requirement for their country – like under 13 in the U.S. – will be banned entirely.
Discord's verification system also includes an appeal option for users incorrectly marked as underage. The platform has already launched the age verification in the UK and Australia, aligning with local regulations, and is set to expand worldwide shortly.
