ChatGPT Gets the Boot in Boulder Valley Schools

Boulder Valley School District is pulling the plug on ChatGPT for students using district devices and Wi-Fi, citing safety concerns over the AI’s new group chat and adult content features. Instead, they're steering educators towards MagicSchool AI – an approved platform that aligns with district safety protocols and keeps student data secure. MagicSchool only allows student access when accompanied by a teacher.

The decision was backed by a 50-member committee of teachers, parents, and students who regularly discuss AI's role in education. Lynn Gershman, academic services director for the district, noted, "ChatGPT implemented things we can’t manage. We’re not going to intervene with AI unless we have to, and ChatGPT gave us that situation. We weren’t feeling that we were keeping kids safe.”

Managing AI in the Classroom

The ChatGPT ban is a proactive measure as the district continues to explore AI’s educational potential. This includes a forthcoming discussion on AI and tech at the school board's study session on March 24. With no formal AI policy in place yet, the board is gearing up for a robust debate on responsible AI use.

One specific worry is ChatGPT's group chat feature, allowing up to 20 users, which poses moderation challenges if bullying occurs. Moreover, ChatGPT's multimedia capabilities – including explicit content generation – are a problem. Age verification through selfies or ID photos is considered inadequate by the district. “If there was bullying taking place, we can’t see it or manage it,” Gershman explained.

Teachers Embrace MagicSchool AI

Enter MagicSchool AI, a savior for teachers like Broomfield High's Stephen Kelly, who has trained the chatbot to mirror his teaching style for student queries, offering an AI tutor experience. "It’s supposed to be like an always-on version of me," Kelly shared, emphasizing its role as a supplement rather than a replacement for hands-on teaching. He reassures students that while ChatGPT offers general help, his tailored chatbot aligns closely with classroom needs.

“I’ve tried to incorporate it as a tool, the same way a math teacher would teach students how to use a TI-83 calculator,” Kelly mentioned.

Kelly's approach involves using AI for case studies, where chatbots simulate patient interactions, enhancing the learning process through conversational scenarios. He stresses AI literacy without complete bans, fostering students' understanding of technology's role. "We’re not shying away from AI, but appropriate use is going to be key," he concluded.
