In Ohio, this means using personal data like photo IDs or even sensitive records such as mortgage, educational, or employment information.

While such laws have led to platforms like Pornhub blocking access in several states, Ohio presents a unique case. Contrary to Reddit rumors, Pornhub remains accessible in the state. The explanation for this anomaly lies in the specific wording of Ohio's legislation.

Pornhub's Loophole

Ohio's law includes an exemption for providers classified as "interactive computer services," a category Pornhub says it falls under according to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. "As a provider of an 'interactive computer service,' we understand that we are not subject to the obligations under section 1349.10 of the Ohio Revised Code regarding mandated age verification," Aylo, Pornhub's owner, explained to Mashable.

“We believe in age verification, but any law must ensure user safety and privacy while effectively protecting minors," a representative from Aylo stated.

The Bigger Picture

Pornhub has shown a willingness to comply with global age-verification standards, as seen in its adherence to the UK's Online Safety Act. However, the company criticizes many age-verification laws for being "ineffective" and "haphazard." Aylo continues to advocate for device-level filters as a better solution to prevent minors from accessing adult content.

As these age-verification laws continue to spread across the U.S. and internationally, it's clear that Pornhub will adapt differently based on legal nuances. For now, Ohioans will maintain access to the site, but the conversation around online safety and privacy is far from over.
