YouTube Shorts is pushing the boundaries of content creation with a groundbreaking new feature: AI avatars that let you create deepfake videos that mirror your own image and voice. As reported by 9to5Google, this exciting update was hinted at earlier this year and is now rolling out via the YouTube and YouTube Create apps.
YouTube crafts a sample avatar by capturing your face from varied angles and recording your voice. Once ready, this digital twin can be paired with a description to generate a deepfake video tailored to your chosen topic. With your lips, expressions, and even hand movements synced to the video's content, the result can be as playful or as serious as you like. One user noted, "The avatar's output was impressively close to their real-life appearance and voice."
Before diving into this AI adventure, you must have a YouTube channel and be at least 18 years old. To start, log into the YouTube app on your phone, tap Create (+), and slide to Short. Hit the star icon resembling Gemini on the top right to enter the AI playground and select Create video > Make a video with my avatar.
You’ll need to provide a live video selfie. During this step, you’ll be asked to move your head and speak a few numbers that appear on your screen. This part captures your facial features and voice, though some users report that ambient noise can lead to repeated attempts.
Once YouTube processes your data, it presents your AI avatar. You can choose to retake if it doesn’t match your expectations. Happy with the result? Move on to the “Describe your idea” section, where you craft the prompt dictating your avatar’s script and actions.
Once your deepfake video is ready, you can either download it or share it on Shorts. To create more, follow the same steps by tapping Create (+) > Shorts > Gemini spark icon > Create Video > Make a video with my avatar. And for those who love to remix, an additional feature allows you to add your avatar to eligible Shorts in your feed via Remix > Reimagine > Add me to this scene.
"Only you can use your avatar to create original videos," Google clarifies on their support page. You have the power to delete your avatar anytime, although this doesn't erase previously created videos, which you'll need to remove manually. Plus, Google will automatically delete any avatar inactive for three years.
The feature is currently available for mobile users outside Europe, with a wider rollout anticipated soon, as confirmed by 9to5Google.
