On a thrilling Saturday night, the New York Liberty roared back to life against the Indiana Fever, thanks to a fierce fourth-quarter performance. Walking into the final stretch, the Liberty was trailing 57-54, but an electrifying offensive onslaught saw them outscore the Fever 29-18, sealing the victory in a dramatic fashion.
Breanna Stewart was at the heart of this exhilarating comeback, leading her team with unyielding determination and skill. Reflecting on the win, Stewart didn’t mince words, highlighting the gritty reality of competing at this level. "This is a really tough league to play in, so if we can separate ourselves defensively, it'll bring us more offensively," she stated, underscoring the importance of balance between defense and offense.
“Listen to me. We didn't shoot the ball well? Like, f*** it. Honestly, we want to win games, whether they're pretty or they're ugly, and that's going to be the separator down the line.”
Stewart wasn’t alone in her efforts. She dazzled with a phenomenal stat line – 30 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and two assists, making 6-of-15 shots and an impressive 18-of-21 from the free-throw line. Not to be outdone, Satou Sabally contributed 13 points and five rebounds while Pauline Astier added 12 points and three rebounds. Jonquel Jones and Marine Johannes also chipped in with eight points each, making it a well-rounded team performance.
With this victory, the Liberty now holds a 7-4 record, solidifying their position as the second seed in the Eastern Conference. They sit above the Indiana Fever and Toronto Tempo, with only the Atlanta Dream ahead of them. The Liberty is eyeing further success as they gear up for their next clash against the Connecticut Sun on June 8 at 7 p.m. ET.
