Despite hopes of a better work-life balance, she now finds herself battling a living nightmare, caught in a legal quagmire over unpaid rent amounting to £22,000.

The 44-year-old marketing consultant encountered financial hardship after quitting her job in early 2023, claiming she never received her full salary. After an eight-month legal fight in a UAE court, she was awarded a fraction of her dues – £8,125. During this tumultuous period, Kerry ventured into entrepreneurship, launching her own marketing agency. However, her financial woes deepened as clients defaulted on payments, leaving her unable to cover her rent.

Arrested Over Rent – A Legal Tangle

By April 2026, Kerry's landlord had won a legal case against her at the Rental Disputes Center (RDC), resulting in her arrest for the unpaid rent. On April 22, 2026, Kerry was detained and spent three weeks in jail, where she felt like she was living in a 'horror movie'. Her son managed to secure a temporary reprieve with a 15-month repayment plan, only for it to be abruptly cut to a mere 15 days.

"It's like something out of a horror film. I don't feel like a criminal, but I'm being treated like one,” Kerry shared, reflecting on her jarring experience in the Dubai justice system.

The ordeal has left Kerry unable to return to the UK, as her lawyer warns of potential indefinite jail time unless the debt is cleared. A GoFundMe page has been set up to aid her in this financial bind.

Hoping for a Way Out

Despite the setbacks, Kerry is determined to shed light on the challenges expats might face in Dubai. "It’s painted as a dream life, but there's a dark side to it," she remarked, underscoring the stark contrast between perception and reality.

With her options narrowing, Kerry hopes to raise enough funds through her campaign to settle the outstanding debt and return to the UK. Her story serves as a cautionary tale about the unforeseen challenges of expatriate life in Dubai, where legal protections can be vastly different from those in the UK.

"A simple civil dispute can lead to an indefinite jail sentence," Kerry warned, urging others to be aware of the potential pitfalls in such settings.
