In a move that's got parents talking, Roblox is launching new age-based accounts, designed to enhance safety and tailor online experiences for young users. Child psychiatrist Dr. Meredith Gansner, also an assistant professor at the University of Rochester, has shared her views on this development, emphasizing the delicate balance between allowing children digital freedom and ensuring their safety.
"While supervision and surveillance are so, so important, really, better than that is actually just teaching your kids," Gansner suggests, highlighting the importance of educating children on responsible technology use. According to her, it's crucial for kids to recognize when they might be struggling with their tech habits, understand what to avoid online, and be aware of potential risks like cyberbullying.
“When you have the ability for somebody who is 8 or 9 years old to interact with somebody who is 20 or 40 years old, those are huge differences in developmental age and what content a child should be seeing,” she comments.
The age-based accounts come in two flavors – Roblox Kids for ages 5 to 8, and Roblox Select for ages 9 to 15. These new accounts offer limited access to certain games and come with chat settings that are turned off by default for the youngest players. Dr. Gansner acknowledges that while chat features can ease feelings of isolation in young gamers, there are significant risks when interactions span wide age ranges.
She views the changes as a positive step forward but warns against using gaming or internet access as a tool to manage negative behaviors. "Things like explosive outbursts or yelling or throwing furniture around the room, the more parents give kids tablets or internet access to limit those behaviors, the more the child learns that that’s how they access those devices," she notes. The key, she says, is teaching kids self-regulation without resorting to digital devices.
Dr. Gansner advocates for mindful parenting, where the focus is on guiding children to manage their emotions and behaviors without relying on technology as a crutch. As Roblox evolves its platform to cater to different age groups, it opens up conversations on how best to integrate digital tools into children's lives without compromising their well-being.
As the digital world continues to intertwine with daily life, these discussions become pivotal in shaping how future generations interact with technology. For the latest on this topic and more, visit RochesterFirst.
