Elle Fanning is making waves with her portrayal of a college student navigating unexpected motherhood in Margo's Got Money Troubles, a series adaptation of Rufi Thorpe’s novel. Teaming up with David E. Kelley for the Apple TV+ show, Fanning revealed she was deeply involved in conversations about how nudity should be handled in the series. Fanning, known for her bold roles, stated she's "not very modest" when it comes to onscreen nudity and expressed pride in how it's depicted in this project.
In the series, Fanning plays Margo, an undergraduate student who finds herself pregnant by her English professor. To support herself financially, Margo turns to OnlyFans. The actress believes the portrayal of nudity in the show is far from being gratuitous. "I feel like I kind of broke that down in The Great," Fanning shared, referring to her previous role in the Hulu series where she played Catherine the Great. "I was like, ‘I’ve kind of already done this.'"
“I’m really proud of how the nudity is depicted in Margo's Got Money Troubles, because it’s not in an overly sexualized way at all," Fanning stated.
The actress elaborated that much of the nudity is tied to the realities of motherhood, highlighting the need to breastfeed. "A lot of it is actually just having to do with the necessities of motherhood," she explained. The show juxtaposes these moments with Margo's experience on OnlyFans, offering commentary on how her relationship with her body evolves.
Fanning emphasized that nudity is "never the focal point of the scene," adding intrigue to the narrative. Special effects came into play to ensure authenticity, with Fanning using prosthetics for breastfeeding scenes. "I would be in the trailer and they’d put them on, and then I would feel like, ‘OK, I’m just going to walk out,'” she recounted humorously.
Joining Fanning in Margo's Got Money Troubles is an impressive lineup including Nicole Kidman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Nick Offerman, Michael Angarano, Thaddea Graham, and Greg Kinnear. Fans can catch new episodes streaming every Wednesday on Apple TV+.
