OnlyFans Stars Speak Out Against Euphoria's Portrayal

OnlyFans creators are hitting back at HBO's hit series Euphoria, calling out what they say are inaccuracies in the portrayal of sex work by Sydney Sweeney's character, Cassie. In the drama's final chapter, Cassie turns to OnlyFans to fund her wedding, and her depiction has sparked controversy.

Critics argue that the show’s presentation, which includes Cassie donning costumes like a baby and a dog, perpetuates harmful stereotypes. For instance, Maitland Ward, a former Boy Meets World star now thriving on OnlyFans, told Variety, “In the climate we’re in, that they dressed her up as a baby to make pornographic OnlyFans content was beyond troubling and again serves to perpetuate stereotypes that sex workers have no moral compass and that they will do anything for money.”

Defending Authenticity in Sex Work Representation

Ward is not alone in her criticism. Another creator, Sydney Leathers, joined the conversation, expressing her frustration about the misleading portrayal. “There’s just a lot that’s ridiculous and cartoonish about it,” Leathers shared. She highlighted the inaccuracies such as age-play material, "There’s so much that they have her doing that is not even allowed on OnlyFans, and that alone is infuriating."

“Credit card processors have very strict rules that you have to abide by, and the rules are getting stricter all the time,” Leathers noted, pointing to the impractical depiction of the platform’s policies.

Critics and Praise for Euphoria's Final Season

Despite the backlash from creators, the third season of Euphoria has been a mixed bag for critics. While some were divided, others, like The Independent’s Nick Hilton, praised Sydney Sweeney's performance, noting her ability to balance "pin-up fame" and "genuine acting chops." Hilton remarked, “Euphoria is a generation-defining show... a materialist show about materialism: Euphoria owns its contradictions.”

Meanwhile, Maitland Ward, who’s transitioned from mainstream acting to OnlyFans, recently shared insights into her lucrative career shift. On the documentary series Hollywood Demons, she revealed, “On Boy Meets World, I think I made $20,000 or $25,000 an episode. In porn or OnlyFans, I can get six figures a month.” Her comments shed light on the financial empowerment OnlyFans offers, challenging outdated stigmas about sex work.
