A report from The Information reveals that more than half of Grok’s activity involves NSFW content. Former employees of the SpaceX-owned company shared insights into how users employ Grok for creating explicit material, from adult role-play chats to generating erotica. Interestingly, some users have discovered it's cost-effective to channel such requests through Grok’s models designed for coding, which are cheaper to operate.

"SpaceX can attribute a decent amount of xAI revenue to porn and adult content," reveals a former employee.

Risks and Repercussions for xAI

This NSFW-driven model has not been without its challenges. Despite being a key revenue driver, the role of adult content in xAI's financials was conspicuously missing from its IPO documentation. SpaceX did, however, caution prospective investors about Grok’s "irreverent" functions, setting aside $530 million for potential legal battles.

Internally, the AI company faces its own hurdles. Engineers have had to balance enabling adult interactions while preventing child sexual abuse material. Additionally, some staff members were uncomfortable with projects like "Ani," Grok’s NSFW anime avatar, and the ensuing scandals from generating sexualized depictions of real individuals. Though the company has restricted some of these capabilities, paid xAI subscribers still have access to potentially controversial features.

Balancing Act with Government Contracts

Grok's adult-themed features pose further complications as xAI pursues government contracts. While the company has successfully secured deals with various agencies and the military, the tolerance for NSFW content in such circles is generally low. Although Grok’s past controversies involving nonconsensual deepfakes and CSAM have sparked legal action, it remains unclear if these incidents have strained xAI’s ties with federal clients.
