AI Girlfriends: A Multimillion-Dollar Love Affair

In a world where technology continually reshapes our lives, AI girlfriends are the latest trend capturing attention—and wallets. From ChatGPT's launch in late 2022, romantic and NSFW AI companion apps have seen 165.3 million downloads and $427.3 million in global consumer spending. These findings, from analytics firm Appfigures Intelligence, highlight a growing market that shows no sign of slowing down.

Randy Nelson, Head of Insights and Media Relations at Appfigures, explained that their rankings are based on downloads or gross consumer spending before tech giants Apple and Google take their platform fees, typically around 30%. "We've monitored 214 NSFW and romantic AI apps that raked in $162.8 million just in the first half of 2026," said Nelson, pointing out the burgeoning interest in digital companionship.

“The market for AI companions is rapidly expanding, and it's fascinating to see how many find solace in digital connections,” Nelson noted.

Top Performers: Who's Leading the AI Romance Game?

In the battle for app supremacy, Zeta emerged as the top earner among romantic and NSFW AI apps, pocketing an impressive $33 million in revenue during the first half of 2026. It was followed by Tipsy Chat: Live Your Story at $15.2 million, ChatBox: AI Chat Bot Assistant at $13 million, Crushie AI: Chat & Companion at $8.8 million, and Emochi: Chat With Character at $7.5 million.

When it came to downloads, Emochi led the pack with 7.9 million installs, trailed by Amora: A Hint of Your Soulmate at 3.6 million, Zeta at 3 million, BIMOBIMO with 2.8 million, and MiraiMind gathering 2.6 million downloads. Intriguingly, while general AI companion apps saw nearly double the downloads, romantic versions amassed nearly the same revenue, reflecting the allure of digital romance.

The Rise of Digisexuality and AI Intimacy

This digital revolution taps into a burgeoning "digisexual" subculture, where emotional connections with AI are becoming increasingly mainstream. A study by Brigham Young University and partners in May 2026 revealed that 15% of partnered U.S. adults aged 18 to 30 engage with AI romantic companions regularly—with a significant 69% concealing their usage from partners.

Pioneering AI platform Joi AI took a step further by inviting real-world users to explore an AI-guided masturbation feature, promising $2,000 a month for feedback on its effects on stress and mood. The campaign's announcement in May 2026 led to an overwhelming response, attracting over 150,000 hopeful participants globally by July.

Appfigures clarified that their analysis uses app store data to categorize apps by romance or adult content, excluding web-only platforms like Joi AI and others from their figures. The stats underscore a pivotal moment where love, technology, and economics intertwine, marking a new era in digital intimacy.
