Maika Monroe Steps Back into Horror with 'Victorian Psycho'

Maika Monroe is no stranger to the horror genre, and she's set to captivate audiences once again with her latest film, Victorian Psycho. The eagerly anticipated 19th-century horror flick has officially snagged its 'R' rating from the MPA this week for its "strong bloody violence and brief sexual material." Fans of the genre can catch this psychological thriller in theaters on September 25, courtesy of Bleecker Street.

Inside the Chilling Plot

In Victorian Psycho, Monroe takes on the role of an eccentric governess in a remote gothic manor, where things aren't quite what they seem. According to The Hollywood Reporter, her character is revealed to be a "19th century serial killer," a role that Monroe describes as both terrifying and challenging. "It terrified me. I knew that it would be the hardest role that I have ever done — and so incredibly different from anything I’ve ever done," Monroe told THR, highlighting the unique challenge of stepping so far from her personal comfort zone.

A Star-Studded Cast

The film's ensemble cast is just as intriguing as its plot. Joining Monroe are a host of talented actors including Thomasin McKenzie of Last Night in Soho fame, Jason Isaacs known for White Lotus, Evie Templeton from Wednesday and Return to Silent Hill, Ruth Wilson of Luther, Amy De Bruhn from Line of Duty, and Jacobi Jupe from Hamnet. The role currently played by Monroe was initially cast with Margaret Qualley, showcasing the dynamic casting decisions behind the film.

From Page to Screen

Victorian Psycho is adapted from Virginia Feito's novel, which debuted on May 5, 2026. The novel, described by Daniel Kurland in Bloody Disgusting as "a dark, disgusting satire of life, death, status, and everything in between," has been transformed into a script by Feito herself. Zachary Wigon, known for his work on Sanctuary, takes the director's chair with Dan Kagan producing.

As anticipation builds, fans can expect a trailer drop soon to whet their appetites. With its gripping storyline, powerful performances, and atmospheric setting, Victorian Psycho promises to be a must-watch for horror enthusiasts.
