Seniors grappling with legal challenges or potential fraud now have a powerful new ally in their corner – a free online tool designed to help them identify and address these issues before they escalate. This innovative platform is making waves in Salt Lake City, where it aims to provide older adults with the resources they need to tackle legal troubles head-on.
The tool in question is the Legal Risk Detector, a web-based legal health “check-up” that simplifies identifying legal issues. Spearheaded by Nels Holmgren, who oversees Aging and Adult Services for the state, this tool offers users a straightforward way to understand the risks they may face in areas such as debt, housing, scams, and essential paperwork.
Using the Legal Risk Detector is a breeze. Upon logging onto the site, users are prompted with simple, direct questions: Do you rent or own? Are concerns about privacy keeping you up at night? As seniors provide their answers, the tool adapts, guiding them toward potential legal red flags.
“It’s really designed for older people to look at their situation and look at the risks that they may be facing with regard to legal issues, to fraud,” said Holmgren.
Critically, users need not worry about the safety of their private information – the platform neither stores personal data nor shares it. If a legal issue surfaces, the tool connects them with Utah Legal Services, initiating a process that aims to resolve concerns around housing, healthcare, benefits, financial exploitation, and family life. For individuals aged 60 and above, assistance is assured free of charge.
The launch of the Legal Risk Detector is part of a larger initiative to empower seniors by providing proactive solutions to potential problems. As Holmgren eloquently put it, “Just like we have great screening tools for our health now and opportunities to get a better sense of how we’re doing, this is really that same sort of tool, but for their legal and financial situation.”
Quick and efficient, the assessment takes less than 15 minutes to complete, marking a significant step toward safeguarding seniors against legal and financial pitfalls. For those interested in accessing the tool, visit here, or reach out to Utah Legal Services for more information.
