'Euphoria' is no stranger to pushing boundaries, and Sydney Sweeney's character Cassie is right at the heart of it. The May 10 episode had Cassie diving deeper into the world of OnlyFans, with scenes that left little to the imagination. Teaming up with Maddie, played by Alexa Demie, Cassie upped her game with saucy content, ranging from steamy audio messages to podcasts advocating for men's rights. However, things heated up further with Cassie filming explicit scenes, sending intimate fan gifts, and, yes, going topless.
As Cassie hustled to boost her income, her husband Nate (Jacob Elordi) pushed her to extremes, urging her to support his financial woes. The storyline hasn't sat well with everyone, particularly within the OnlyFans community. Criticism from some creators about their profession's portrayal prompted series creator Sam Levinson to defend his artistic vision.
Levinson, in a candid chat with The Hollywood Reporter, explained the layers of absurdity woven into Cassie's narrative. "[Cassie] has got her dog house and her little dog ears and the nose, and that has its own humor," he noted, adding that the humor is amplified by having her housekeeper behind the camera. The idea was to blend fantasy with a dose of reality – as jarring as it might feel.
Director of Photography Marcell Rév brought these scenes to life with a unique aesthetic. Opting for a mid-century home setting, Rév aimed to merge OnlyFans' intimate vibe with the show's distinctive style. "It might seem like an odd choice," Rév admitted, "but it opens up creative possibilities." The use of ring lights enhanced the mood, capturing both the allure and the underlying bleakness of Cassie's world.
Despite the backlash, Levinson is standing firm, determined to explore the complex layers of Cassie's world. "Some of these scenes we only lit with these ring lights that she would use," Levinson revealed. "It’s just gnarly and jarring. We wanted to capture what she’s trying to show the audience and be inside of it. But then also pull back wider and see how depressing it is.”
