In a surprising turn of events, Sydney Sweeney's brief appearance in the highly anticipated sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, has been axed. The news broke on April 21, just days after Sweeney became embroiled in a heated controversy over her character's arc in Euphoria's third season, which premiered on April 12.
Fans quickly speculated whether the drama surrounding her Euphoria role might have influenced the decision to cut her from the film. Many took to social media to voice their thoughts, with one user quipping, “Why did they remove her? Don’t tell me it’s because of the Euphoria saga.”
In the current season of Euphoria, Sweeney portrays Cassie Howard, a character who turns to creating explicit content online. The portrayal has stirred intense debate, with critics deeming some scenes "disturbing" and "exploitative." This backlash extended beyond casual viewers, drawing criticism from professionals within the adult industry.
“Cassie was exactly the kind of girl… Beautiful, but directionless. So desperate for attention, she’s willing to humiliate herself,” commented the series' narrator, voiced by Zendaya.
Sweeney's role in the movie was reportedly a three-minute cameo styled by Emily Blunt’s character, Emily Charlton. However, sources told Entertainment Weekly that the scene was removed for "structural" reasons, and the production team expressed gratitude for Sweeney's participation, insisting there was no animosity.
Yet, fans aren't buying it. Some suspect the film's distributor, Disney, opted to distance the franchise from the controversy surrounding Sweeney's current image. "Sweeney being in a movie about fashion makes much less sense since she’s an actress not a model," noted one skeptical fan.
Sweeney isn’t alone in her fate; Anna Wintour's cameo also hit the cutting room floor, though it will appear as a streaming bonus feature. Even Conrad Ricamora's role as Andy Sachs's roommate was scrapped after test audiences questioned its logic, given the time lapse from the original film.
Despite these edits, the sequel promises a star-studded lineup, including appearances by Lady Gaga, Lucy Liu, and Naomi Campbell. It appears the filmmakers are skirting controversy while maintaining their high-fashion allure.
