Johnny Somali, whose real name is Ramsey Khalid Ismael, is heading to a South Korean jail after a series of legal mishaps. The YouTube star was slapped with a six-month sentence after being arrested in 2024. His charges included distributing fabricated sexually explicit content and causing a public disturbance.
Somali admitted guilt to most accusations, steering clear of only one – distributing sexual deepfake videos of Korean streamers. In court, he expressed remorse, claiming his actions were fueled by alcohol. "I did some foolish things under the influence of alcohol, and I realize the consequences. I sincerely apologize for this," he told the court, as reported by Legal Mindset.
Johnny Somali's antics in South Korea in 2024 didn't sit well with authorities. He filmed himself engaging in stunts for social media, one of which involved kissing a statue commemorating World War II's comfort women, sparking outrage. The court noted his continuous disregard for local laws while profiting from his YouTube content.
His antics were called out by the court for "repeatedly committing crimes against unspecified members of the public to generate profit."
Though Somali later apologized, his post was already deleted, and his behavior landed him with additional public nuisance charges, including causing chaos at a convenience store in Seoul. NBC News highlighted that the influencer was banned from leaving South Korea pending his hearing.
Somali pleaded guilty to several charges in March 2025, yet denied distributing sexual deepfakes. He expressed remorse yet again in April 2026. "I'm sorry for my crimes," he stated in court. Contrary to his public statements on social media, Somali's criticism of the charges against him remained vocal.
Despite his attempts to contest the charges, the court found Somali guilty of all accusations by April 2026, sentencing him to six months in a specialized labor prison. His sentence, while shorter than the two years prosecutors initially requested, includes sex offender status. "We felt two or three years would be a fair amount of time in prison for him," prosecutors noted.
Johnny Somali is notorious in the online world for his provocative and controversial antics. Over time, these antics have led to bans from various streaming platforms. He openly shared clips that earned him an indefinite suspension from Kick for hate speech, admitting he was intoxicated during the recordings.
In January 2026, Somali posted, "These 4 clips are why I am 'indefinitely' suspended on Kick for Hate Speech." He defended himself by stating "I would never say this sober. Not for harming anyone, harassing anyone or any kind of sexual misconduct."
