RCMP Cracks Down in NWT

The RCMP’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit has brought charges against Adam Mourtada, an 18-year-old from Inuvik, for possession and distribution of child sexual abuse and exploitation material. Authorities have confirmed that no youth in the region were victimized. The charges come after a meticulous investigation by the NWT ICE Unit.

Mourtada was arrested on June 23 by the ICE Unit alongside Inuvik RCMP officers. The operation involved executing a search warrant at a residence, resulting in the seizure of several electronic devices destined for forensic examination.

Ongoing Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The Northwest Territories ICE Unit continues to probe the case. "At present time, there is no indication that any children in the region have been victims of abuse related to this case," the RCMP clarified in a statement released on Tuesday.

Currently out on bail, Mourtada must adhere to strict conditions including no unsupervised contact with minors and avoidance of public spaces frequented by those under 16 years old. These conditions also preclude him from roles of trust or authority over minors.

Looking Ahead

The ICE Unit’s investigation began on June 4, leading to the charges laid after 19 days of dedicated work. Mourtada is scheduled to appear in court in Inuvik on July 21, where the next steps in this legal journey will unfold.
