Meta is dialing up its commitment to teen safety on Instagram and Facebook by rolling out enhanced content restrictions for users in Korea. The tech giant is tightening the reins on what teens can see and engage with, aiming to block access to adult-rated content and interactions with inappropriate accounts.
Teen accounts will face broad bans on viewing mature content, including sexually suggestive material, profanity, and violent imagery. This also extends to interactions via direct messages (DMs), comments, and searches. Meta emphasizes that these new rules align with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) guidelines to help ensure a safer online experience for teens.
Under the revamped rules, teens won't be able to follow accounts that regularly post adult content, nor will they be able to receive messages from such accounts. In fact, even if inappropriate content is sent via DM, it will remain blocked from view. These measures are part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to make its platforms safer for younger users.
“Blocking adult-level content is crucial to fostering a safer space for teen users,” Meta shared in a statement, highlighting the importance of these changes.
Meta also maintains existing features like "sleep mode" to regulate usage hours and encourages breaks after extended screen time. This is part of a broader initiative to balance safety with user autonomy, ensuring teens can enjoy the platforms without exposure to harmful content.
The push for stronger regulation isn’t confined to Korea. Meta has been rolling out these features across the Asia-Pacific region following their introduction in countries like the U.S., U.K., Australia, and Canada. There's also talk of legislation that would require parental approval for age verification when downloading apps, adding another layer of protection.
Experts suggest this is part of a global trend towards safeguarding teens on social media. Australia, for instance, has already implemented a minimum age law for social media use. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, Meta stands at the forefront, committed to creating a more secure environment for teen users worldwide.
