Netflix's New Comedy Strategy: The Return of Adult Animation

Netflix is mixing things up with a strategic shift that brings adult animation back under the guidance of Tracey Pakosta, the streamer’s esteemed VP of Comedy Original Series. This move rewinds the clock to 2020, when Pakosta first took the reins as Head of Comedy, originally including adult animation in her domain.

Billy Wee, Director of Adult Animation, along with team members such as Lauren Castro, are now set to report directly to Pakosta. This restructuring aims to streamline the comedy landscape by keeping both live-action and animation creators under a unified umbrella, a structure that aligns with the fluid nature of talent crossing between different comedic forms.

Why the Change? Comedy and Animation Unite

Previously, Netflix's adult animation category was under the watchful eye of John Derderian, the platform’s VP of Animation Series + Kids & Family TV. This realignment signals an end to Derderian's oversight as his division pivots towards expanding preschool and creator-driven kids' content.

As comedy talent frequently floats between formats—be it live-action, animated series, or standup—this strategic move is designed to nurture synergy within Netflix’s comedic ecosystem. The shake-up occurred a few weeks ago, setting the stage just before Netflix's broader feature animation restructuring, which was highlighted by appointing Hannah Minghella as Head of Netflix Animation Studio.

Notable figures in the comedy realm, such as Mike Schur and Nick Kroll, are collaborating with Pakosta’s team. Schur, alongside his live-action project A Man On The Inside, now adds an adult animated series, Dang!, to his Netflix portfolio. Similarly, Kroll is juggling a live-action project, A Hundred Percent, alongside an animated endeavor titled Mating Season. Comedy heavyweights Ali Wong and Ricky Gervais also blend their standup with animated series contributions at Netflix.

“Netflix’s decision to unite live-action and animation under one roof reflects the dynamic nature of comedy creation,” said a representative familiar with the change.

Beyond Mating Season and Dang!, the platform's current and upcoming adult animated series lineup includes titles like Long Story Short and Dealies. On the live-action front, viewers can look forward to series such as Big Mistakes, The Hawk, The Four Seasons, Running Point, Emily in Paris, Nobody Wants This, Leanne, and Survival of the Thickest.
