Meta'S Muse Image Ai: How To Opt Out And Safeguard Your Instagram Photos

Meta's Controversial AI Image Generator

Meta is stirring up the digital scene with its new AI image generator, Muse Image, which is attracting criticism for its automatic usage of public Instagram photos. If you're an adult with a public profile, the AI can tap into your content unless you proactively opt out. The process is as easy as tagging a public profile in the Meta AI app and requesting new images derived from your photos.

The launch of Muse Image and its sibling, Muse Video, on July 7 positioned Meta alongside other AI image giants like Google's Nano Banana 2. Developed by Superintelligence Labs, these models promise to blend photos into high-quality visuals, ready for sharing across social media. However, not everyone is thrilled with the potential for non-consensual image manipulation.

Public Backlash and Privacy Concerns

The reaction was swift and vocal. Users took to social media to express their frustration, with one commenting on X that this was "a privacy landmine waiting to detonate." Technology advocates and talent agencies are equally alarmed, raising flags over the lack of consent inherent in the process.

“No one's name, image, likeness, voice or creative work should be used by any third party, including AI models, without clear, documented consent. True innovation puts creators first."

Donald Campbell from Foxglove, a tech justice non-profit, labeled Meta's decision a "recipe for disaster." Meanwhile, Creative Artists Agency is pushing for a switch to opt-in practices to better respect creator rights.

Meta's Response and How to Opt Out

Meta has responded with assurances of "strong controls and safety guardrails," stating that private accounts and users under 18 are excluded. For adults who wish to keep their accounts public while opting out, the process involves a few quick taps on the Instagram app: access your profile picture, navigate the menu, and find "Sharing and Reuse." In the U.S., this feature can be adjusted under "Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features." Canadian users see similar options.

Muse Image is available on the Meta AI app and via Instagram Stories in the U.S., with a broader rollout planned. The Muse Video AI generator is also set to debut in the coming months.
