Nanami Matsumoto first captured hearts in 2015 as a gravure idol, her fame propelled by her striking 100-centimeter bust. Her bold leap into the world of adult video (AV) acting two years later only expanded her fanbase. Fast forward to January 5, when Matsumoto stunned the industry with news of her departure from her management agency and her decision to "graduate" from the mainstream AV circuit to embrace freelancing.
“After working in the industry for so long, I started wondering if simply maintaining the status quo was enough,” she reflected on her career shift. “I thought, ‘It’s now or never.’ I now handle all my own sales and management.”
In a candid chat with Spa! magazine, Matsumoto delved into her fresh journey within the fiercely competitive doujin (independent) AV market. Here, she works with her tight-knit "Team Matsumoto," taking on everything from planning and editing to social media promotion. Despite the allure of independence, she cautions everyone against underestimating the challenges.
“I want to clear up a misunderstanding: Doujin doesn’t absolutely guarantee you’ll make money,” Matsumoto emphasized. "It is entirely dependent on your own hard work. You have to consistently shoot and post. If you slack off, your income drops to zero. You need courage, resolution and persistence.”
Away from the cameras, Matsumoto has been living a double life, quietly working as a part-time corporate accountant for almost a decade. Her journey began with assisting a friend's startup, despite having no prior accounting knowledge. She self-taught her way to a Level 2 commercial bookkeeping certification.
"I originally worked at the office, but I was quickly outed by people from other companies in our shared workspace,” she laughed, sharing how she transitioned to remote work amidst the buzz of her AV identity being discovered.
Her financial acumen doesn't just shape her professional life; it also informs her views on personal relationships. Reflecting on her younger, more romantic days, Matsumoto acknowledges the importance of financial independence, especially for women in precarious situations.
“I know a lot of girls who say they can’t break up with a guy because they have no money,” she stated, advocating for independence. "Even if they are suffering from domestic violence or psychological abuse, they can’t escape if they aren’t financially independent. I refuse to be dependent; even if I have a partner, I want to keep working.”
Looking towards the future, Matsumoto aspires to step away from the limelight. With her experience both in front of and behind the camera, she aims to guide and protect the next wave of women in the adult entertainment industry through consulting and management roles.
