Robin Byrd: The Icon Before the Internet Revolution

Before YouTube and OnlyFans ever captured our screens, Robin Byrd reigned supreme on New York City’s eclectic late-night scene. From 1977 to 1998, Byrd hosted the wildest talk show on public access' Channel J, welcoming porn stars, strippers, and a slew of downtown eccentrics. Her show, "The Robin Byrd Show," was an unapologetic celebration of free expression, often pushing boundaries with its explicit content.

Byrd's battle against cable giant Time Warner, who attempted to scramble her content, went all the way to the Supreme Court and resulted in a victory for free speech. Now, at 69, Byrd is the subject of a new documentary, "Bang My Box: The Robin Byrd Story," distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery. The irony isn't lost on Byrd, who calls it "karma," not revenge.

Inside the Documentary: Sarah Jessica Parker's Key Role

Produced with Hollywood star power from Sarah Jessica Parker, "Bang My Box" delves into the life of this public access legend. The film, directed by Jyllian Gunther and Stephanie Schwam, relives Byrd's journey from a turbulent childhood on the Upper East Side to becoming a symbol of sexual liberation and safety during the AIDS crisis.

"I go through life happy and spreading love to everybody," Byrd shares in the documentary. "It’s easier to love – love is love, and it’s so much easier than hate."

Byrd’s story is one of resilience. After being thrown out by her adoptive mother at 13, she turned to sex work to survive. Her rise to fame began in 1977 when she launched her show on Channel J, famously wearing a black crocheted bikini.

The Unseen Personal Side of Robin Byrd

Beyond her public persona, Byrd's personal life is equally compelling. Married to Shelley, her "love of my life" since 1974, Byrd describes him as "soft and sensitive," akin to a "little Jewish mother." Despite his battle with dementia, Byrd remains his devoted caretaker, finding joy and laughter amidst the challenges.

"We immediately fell in love with Shelley," co-director Gunther told The Post, highlighting the film's emotional depth. Byrd and Shelley’s enduring bond adds a heartfelt layer to a documentary that's as much about love as it is about a historic TV phenomenon.
