In a development that has captured public attention, a plea agreement was filed on Monday for former Charleston judge James Gosnell Jr. This comes after Gosnell was discovered possessing thousands of images of child sexual abuse material. If the presiding judge approves the agreement, Gosnell will plead guilty to one count of possession of child pornography involving a prepubescent minor and one count of distribution of child pornography. In exchange, four additional charges will be dropped.
Child pornography is a federal charge often referred to as child sexual abuse material (CSAM) today. Gosnell could face up to 20 years in prison for possession and a fine up to $250,000. The distribution charge includes a mandatory minimum sentence of five years, potentially reaching 20 years, and carries a similar fine. Additionally, both charges require five years of supervised release, and Gosnell must register as a sex offender.
“This plea marks a significant legal turn for Gosnell, who was arrested last September following a cyber tip-off that traced illegal activity back to him,” said a legal expert familiar with the case.
Gosnell was apprehended on September 16, 2025, after federal authorities acted on a cyber tip. The investigation connected illegal activities to online accounts linked to him. This plea deal closely follows another related case involving John Badger Thorpe, a 69-year-old who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to receive and distribute CSAM, along with two counts of distributing the material. Thorpe was arrested concurrently with Gosnell and was identified as an online acquaintance sharing similar illicit interests.
Gosnell's trial was initially scheduled for August 24, but the plea agreement could now alter the judicial proceedings. This case, along with Thorpe's, underscores the ongoing legal battles against the distribution and possession of CSAM.
