Alejandra Omaña, who became a household name in the adult film industry as Amaranta Hank, has swapped film sets for the political stage. This week, Omaña was sworn into Colombia's Senate in Bogotá, representing the left-wing Historic Pact party. Her election platform centered on the rights and protections for adult content creators, signaling a significant shift in her career.
The Historic Pact, which is the largest party in Colombia's Senate, helped propel Omaña to her new position after she placed 23rd in the runoff vote. In a heartfelt address to her supporters, she expressed her gratitude, saying, "I feel embraced by my people."
Before stepping into the political limelight, Omaña was a journalist who transitioned into the adult film industry in 2017, starring in 26 productions over three years. Her political journey began in Norte de Santander, where she won a regional seat, eventually leading her to the Senate with the backing of the Historic Pact – the same party that supported former President Gustavo Petro.
Despite facing criticisms due to her past career, Omaña has stood firm against detractors. She often references Ilona Staller, known as Cicciolina, an Italian adult film star who successfully entered politics, as a testament to voters' ability to distinguish between personal history and political agenda.
“Society may consume adult films, but it often denies us a seat at the table of power,” Omaña remarked, addressing the skepticism surrounding her Senate position.
Omaña’s campaign promises to advocate for stronger legal protections for adult content creators, many of whom lack basic labor rights and social security. She argues that performers are often left vulnerable due to misinformation and societal prejudice.
In her campaign, Omaña emphasized the need for better enforcement against companies exploiting performers, asserting that regulation aims to safeguard workers. "My experience allowed me to understand inequality, the struggle for freedom, and the popular economy, arguments that I now promise to bring directly into legislative debate," she stated.
Omaña's ascent from adult film performer to senator has sparked conversations not only in Colombia but also internationally, as her unique background continues to capture public attention.
