Children Leading the AI Adoption Wave

Artificial intelligence isn't just revolutionizing work—it's reshaping how kids learn, play, and seek information. A recent UNICEF analysis across ten countries found that over 20 million children globally are already engaging with AI tools. Surprisingly, they're embracing this technology at a rate nearly three times higher than their adult counterparts.

Education tops the list when it comes to AI usage among kids. Around 13 million reported using AI to aid their schoolwork and learning. Meanwhile, over 2 million are turning to AI for guidance on personal issues, such as anxiety or worries.

“Children today are growing up in the middle of a global technological transformation whose consequences are not yet fully predictable,” UNICEF stated.

While AI opens doors for creativity and play, UNICEF warns of potential concerns over cognitive development, emotional attachment, privacy, and exposure to harmful content.

Concerns and Risks Highlighted by Kids

Children aren't oblivious to the potential pitfalls of AI. The study reports one in three children fear AI could be misused for fraud, deception, or spreading false information. Additionally, one in four worries about their photos or videos being manipulated into explicit deepfake images.

Despite their increasing interaction with AI, children often lack insight into how these systems are created, the business models behind them, or how personal data is managed. UNICEF stresses that kids could be the first to face the repercussions of inadequate AI regulation.

UNICEF's Call for Child-Centric AI Policies

As the world gears up for the AI Governance Global Dialogue, UNICEF urges governments and tech companies to prioritize children's rights in AI policymaking. The organization advocates for more research on AI's impact on children, stronger legal protections against AI-related exploitation, development of transparent AI systems, and improving AI literacy for both children and parents.
