Being a New Yorker and having my 30-year-old son, Alec, living across the country in Southern California means our time together is often rushed or fleeting. Whether it's his busy life or my packed schedule, finding moments to connect can be a challenge. So, when I proposed a mother-son vacation, we both agreed it was an opportunity to bond amid the tropical serenity of Hawaii.
Before booking flights, Alec laid out essential ground rules for our vacation – we had to approach it as equals. For someone who’s always loved being in charge, it required a conscious effort to be open to his ideas. But I relished the chance to see him take the lead. Additionally, Alec suggested we share expenses, which ended up being a significant step towards our balanced partnership.
“Having an equal say in planning made the trip more personal for both of us,” Alec shared during our trip.
With four days off over Memorial Day Weekend, Alec was keen on Hawaii's laid-back vibe, while I longed to revisit a place that holds childhood memories. He was all about destressing at a resort and indulging in poke, while my priority was avoiding heatstroke and finding that perfect yoga class.
Hawaii's endless attractions made it the perfect spot. Alec, a fan of "Top Chef," discovered that Sheldon Simeon, a former contestant, would be preparing a special dinner at the Ritz-Carlton O’ahu during our stay. It was an irresistible opportunity to explore the island's culinary scene, and we decided to stay at the same resort.
We set one more boundary – balancing our time together with moments apart. Mornings were solo adventures, with Alec surfing and me swimming laps. I enjoyed a lei-making workshop, while Alec attended tennis clinics. This approach allowed us to respect each other's space and interests, despite sharing a room.
The highlight, however, was our deep conversations. On May 24, I mentioned my late father's birthday, leading to Alec sharing touching memories of his grandpa. Our discussions also delved into societal issues like income inequality, echoing Alec's observation of vacationing doctors and teachers. His insights resonated deeply with me, especially as a former teacher.
Our Hawaiian adventure wasn't just about the beautiful landscapes or delicious meals. It was the personal moments and heartfelt talks that truly brought us closer. Alec devoured poke, I perfected my yoga poses, and we both reveled in the lush island trails and Pacific waves. But more than anything, it was the shared experiences and conversations that created lasting memories.
I'm already dreaming of our next adventure together, knowing this trip set a wonderful precedent for our future travels.
