Jeff Guenther, better known online as "Therapy Jeff," has issued a heartfelt apology after facing criticism for a series of contentious posts on social media. On his Threads account, Guenther posed a question that raised eyebrows: asking if there was a dedicated national helpline for men worried about potentially assaulting their partners. He later admitted that his approach to the sensitive topic was flawed.
The influencer, followed by millions across Instagram and TikTok, expressed regret for his choice of words. In a video shared on April 21, he reflected on his mistake, acknowledging that instead of focusing on the experiences of survivors, he inadvertently shifted the conversation towards those who might cause harm. "I was wrong, and I'm very sorry," Guenther admitted, directly addressing his followers' concerns.
Guenther clarified that his initial framing of the issue was not only inappropriate but clinically incorrect. He wrongly applied an OCD treatment framework to address sexual assault, despite it being a matter driven by entitlement rather than intrusive thoughts. His post coincided with a CNN investigation into a network of men engaging in harmful behaviors, adding to the public's unease.
“I misapplied an OCD treatment framework to a completely different issue, and I was out of my scope,” Guenther confessed, highlighting his commitment to learning from the feedback.
He expressed gratitude to those who educated him, emphasizing the importance of continuing to learn and grow from the experience, particularly from the input of women and survivors who took time to elaborate on the issues.
In a separate incident, Guenther also found himself under fire for a sexually explicit response to a query about sexual preferences, which he swiftly removed from Threads. He revisited this in his apology video, accepting responsibility for crossing a line. "While that alone was inappropriate, I also didn't take into account how hurtful this was, given everything that's going on," he admitted.
Through his apology, Therapy Jeff reassured his audience of his dedication to creating a safe online environment, a foundational element of his work as a therapist. He acknowledged the need for better judgment and apologized for any harm caused, promising to improve his approach and sensitivity going forward.
