Human Lactoferrin's Surprising Gut Benefits

The spotlight is on human lactoferrin as researchers uncover its potential to revolutionize gut health in adults. Known for its immune-boosting powers in infants, this iron-binding glycoprotein is making waves with its effects on the adult gut microbiome. A study in the Journal of Dietary Supplements dives into how human lactoferrin impacts microbial diversity and short-chain fatty acid production.

Lactoferrin, naturally found in human breast milk, is adored for its antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory qualities. It's not just a hero for babies – new findings suggest it might be the next hot ingredient for adult gut health, boosting microbial diversity without rocking the microbiome's boat.

Breaking Down the Research

The recent study evaluated a precision-fermented version of human lactoferrin, known as effera by Helaina. This ingredient, identical to human milk lactoferrin, was tested against bovine lactoferrin in a rigorous clinical trial. Sixty-six healthy adults participated in this double-blind, parallel-arm controlled trial over 28 days, comparing low and high doses of human lactoferrin to bovine lactoferrin.

Researchers found no disruption in microbial diversity but noted an increase in the Lachnospira and Paraprevotella genera, both crucial for fermenting fiber into short-chain fatty acids. The star of the show was acetate, which saw a significant boost in production with human lactoferrin compared to its bovine counterpart.

A New Chapter in Lactoferrin Research

This study marks a pivotal moment in lactoferrin research, shifting focus from infants and preclinical models to healthy adults. While previous work highlighted its benefits for preemies and toddlers, this research underscores its potential for adult supplementation. Acetate, one of the short-chain fatty acids that saw increased levels, is noted for its potential health benefits like appetite regulation and glucose metabolism.

“Human lactoferrin could be a game-changer for gut health,” said researchers. The findings open the door for more in-depth studies exploring how human-identical lactoferrin can further influence the adult microbiome.
