In a landmark move, West Virginia has clinched an $11 million settlement from popular online gaming platform Roblox, driving significant changes in how the company safeguards its young users. Announced by West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey, this deal promises stronger protections for underage players, reshaping the online gaming experience for children across the state.
The settlement mandates Roblox to roll out key safety measures, including mandatory age verification, limited adult-to-child interactions, and default safe content settings for users under 16. Additionally, the company will spearhead safety training for both West Virginia families and local law enforcement, ensuring everyone is equipped to navigate the digital landscape safely.
"Our investigation found serious failures that left children exposed to real danger. This settlement changes that," McCuskey emphasized. "Roblox will now verify who its users are, limit who can contact children, and block inappropriate content by default. I am thankful that Roblox took our concerns seriously and worked with us to make these major safety changes."

The investigation that led to this settlement highlighted alarming gaps where underage users could potentially come into contact with predators or inappropriate content. In response, Roblox has committed to dedicating a "West Virginia-based internet safety specialist" to collaborate with law enforcement and conduct platform-specific training.
The financial breakdown of the settlement reveals that $500,000 will fund safety education workshops for parents and children across West Virginia, while $1.5 million is set aside for a three-year public safety campaign. Another $2.4 million will compensate the internet safety specialist over six years, averaging $400,000 annually.
This settlement follows a similar agreement with Nevada, where Roblox pledged a $12 million payment to enhance user safety. These efforts reflect Roblox’s commitment to evolving its platform’s safety protocols in response to growing concerns from both users and authorities.
